Travel advice for retirees

Category: Retirement

Retirement can be the perfect time to explore the world and visit the places you’ve always wanted to. But before you just sail off into the sunset, plan your travels wisely, so that your journey is completely stress-free.

Put your health first

It’s best to get a full physical before you embark on your trip and get the okay from your doctor that you’re healthy enough for travel. Also, depending on where you’re going, you may need vaccinations. If you have a certain condition that may require medical care while you’re gone, research the facilities that will be closest to you and that can offer the treatment you need. That way, if you get sick and need medical attention, you will know exactly where to go.

Prepare for emergencies

No matter where you go, make sure you bring a first-aid kit and a to-go bag with any essentials, including your medications. Even if you’re only going on a short excursion, bring a small bag with you that contains anything you might need should an emergency arise. Be sure to also drink plenty of fluids so that you stay hydrated.

Pack smart

Properly packing your bags can make travel much easier. Use lightweight baggage that is not just mobile and comfortable, but can also be spotted easily amongst large amounts of luggage. Also, pack as light as possible and find ways to re-use what you take. For instance, instead of planning a new outfit for each day that you will be gone, plan on doing laundry on your trip and re-wearing some of the same things. It’s also important not to overstuff your bags so that you can make room for any souvenirs.

Research destination activities

Find activities that cater to an older demographic, which can help you plan your vacation activities. You may need to research this ahead of time, because the more popular attractions at a particular destination may not appeal to you.

Request more comfortable accommodations

Contact your hotel ahead of time (the more in advance, the better) and ask for a room that is not over a restaurant, ballroom, bar, or other area where you may encounter late-night noise while trying to sleep. Additionally, ask for a room near the elevator to minimize walking time.
